The aim of the Medical Administration Traineeship is to provide learners with the skill, knowledge, and competencies to provide administrative support and perform administrative work in a medical office environment for the medical, dental and general healthcare sector.
This is a Traineeship programme. Traineeship are targeted at occupations which are not designated as apprenticeships but entail significant skill requirements which are best acquired through a combination of alternating periods of in-centre and employer-based training.
The course modules include Word Processing; text production; audio transcription, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and communications.
As a traineeship, this course includes a ten-week placement in a medical office in a hospital, GP, or Dental Practice. This has proven very successful in assisting learners to get full-time positions.
This course has a good history of graduates gaining employment in general medical and dental practices.
We also offer a Healthcare traineeship.
This is a full time tutor led course where a combination of training methods is used to deliver this course. These include instructions, presentations, demonstrations, supervised practice, practical work training, discussion groups, role plays, and giving and receiving feedback. Participants are required to actively participate in the learning process and engage in course work outside of course hours. They must complete a number of written exercises throughout the course and keep up-to-date records of their progress. A number of methods are used to assess the participants’ progress and for certification purposes. These include internal theory exams, practical exams, learner records and skills demonstrations.
Applicants should have achieved a minimum of a QQI Level 4 Major Award or its equivalent. Good numerical and communication skills are essential, including verbal and written command of the English language.
The healthcare sector is one of the largest employers in Ireland. It includes private medical practices such as doctors, dentists and physiotherapists; public and private hospitals; hospices; nursing homes; clinics; medical insurance companies; and supplies and manufactures of medical devices, equipment, and medicines. All of these companies employ secretaries and administrators. Small medical practices generally employ one or two secretaries/administrators, while larger companies and organisations require a much higher number of administration staff.
